They started out with simple EL tube, polycarbonate blades powered by a 6 AA battery power source. Since then the FX Lightsabers have been improved to use sequential LED strings and only require 3 AA batteries. the sound effects on the new FX Lightsaber models have been made louder and more clear as well.
